Iga Swiatek has called out fake news after she was misquoted in her comments regarding Rafael Nadal. Currently competing at the 2023 Italian Open, the top seed spoke at length about how important it was for a player to become good on all surfaces, like Rafael Nadal.

Iga Swiatek has publicly claimed that Rafael Nadal is her ‘idol’, and soundly used his example to demonstrate her point. The Pole commented that despite being a clay-court specialist, Rafael Nadal has achieved success on other courts as well. Hence, the World number one stated that her goal was to be equally good on all surfaces.

However, the media twisted her words, which sparked an instant reaction from the three-time Grand Slam champion. According to the fake news, Iga Swiatek was quoted saying that Rafael Nadal has won everything on hard and grass courts, and the goal was to win everything like him.

Iga Swiatek took to her Twitter handle to call out the fake news. The Pole stated that she absolutely did not say the things mentioned in their article. “I didn’t say this. Why do you publish fake news?,” she tweeted.

The reporting website, ‘We Are Tennis’, was quick to apologize for its error, and also deleted the tweet moments later. They claimed that they obtained the news from a worthy source, but it proved to be false instead.

On the sports side of things, Iga Swiatek looks to complete a hattrick of titles in Rome this week, as she remains the certain favorite to go all the way. The 21-year-old has been utterly dominant on clay courts over the past couple of years, winning the French Open on two occasions. After sweeping all clay court titles last season, she has already bagged the Charleston Open title this year.

The World number one was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka in the finals of the Madrid Open, which was a replay of the 2023 Charleston Open final. With the Belarusian’s early exit from the Italian Open, there are not many players who can stop Iga Swiatek from defending her title in Rome.
