Former tennis player Pam Shriver recently remarked that Iga Swiatek drew her inspiration from the legend Serena Williams herself losing out on the World No. 1 rank, which ultimately led to her winning the 2023 China Open in sensational fashion. Swiatek made a massive comeback after her back-to-back poor performances in a number of tournaments by winning the China Open.
En route to the final, Swiatek beat the likes of Caroline Garcia and Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion. Then, in the final, she beat Liudmila Samsonova to end up winning the title. If she has really made a comeback and goes on winning tournaments like this, then she might regain her World No. 1 ranking very soon.
Pam Shriver recently opined that just like Serena Williams had a number of ‘revenge tours’ after performing poorly in a tournament, Swiatek took her revenge in the China Open. “You can think about the great players through the years at the top, who lose a spot or two in the rankings. they tend to respond pretty well. You think about how Serena Williams responded to having losses. The ‘Revenge tour’ that she may have been on at certain points in her career. I think Iga took that, when she faced Coco,” Shriver said via Inside-In Podcast.
Swiatek’s downfall might be considered to have started at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, where she lost to Gauff for the first time ever. Thus, it is only poetic that she defeated the same Gauff after she won the 2023 US Open, to win back her confidence and form.
Fight for the WTA World No. 1 ranking intensifies due to Iga Swiatek
Swiatek is now almost within touching distance to overtaking Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA rankings and becoming the World No. 1 once again. Sabalenka currently has 9480 points, while the Polish international has 8890 points. Ever since the 2023 US Open, the World No. 1 has performed very poorly and if Iga is able to capitalize on that to her advantage, she will be the World No. 1 again soon.

The upcoming WTA Finals, which will be held in Cancun, is the most significant WTA event after the Grand Slam events. It might see some major changes in the rankings and it will be the best opportunity for the Poland’s ace to regain her position at the very top. If she is able to do so, Iga Swiatek will be the World No. 1 player before the year ends.
