Iga Swiatek has been in terrific form during the ongoing clay court tournament. The clay-court specialist has already claimed the Stuttgart Open title, and finished as the runner-up at the 2023 Madrid Open. She remains the overwhelming favorite to defend her title in Rome.
“She thanked me for supporting Ukraine, but she did it also before in Miami. It’s really nice and I really appreciate that,” Swiatek said in her press conference. “Well, I think there’s nothing to kind of thank for because for me it’s pretty obvious that we should support Ukraine. Yeah, I will do that until the war is going to end. But I know that they are in a tough situation, so I have a lot of empathy to all the Ukrainian players,” said Swiatek.
Iga Swiatek will next face Donna Vekic in the fourth round of the Italian Open. The top seed has been completely ruthless so far, dropping just two games so far. She dropped a double bagel on the 2021 French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round. The 21-year-old hardly broke any sweat in defeating Lesia Tsurenko in the third round as well. With Aryna Sabalenka facing a surprisingly early defeat, Iga Swiatek remains the certain favorite to claim the title once again.
