World No. 1 Iga Swiatek faced her toughest test in a long time by World No. 16 and former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka during the Round of 16 clash at the 2022 Italian Open. After a battle of 1 hour and 55 minutes, Swiatek clinched the victory 6-4, 6-1 to move into the quarter-finals in her title defence in Rome.

The first set lasted for 79 minutes with Iga 0-3 and 2 breakpoints down. She however rallied back strongly to take the set and take the upper hand in the match. The long first set had an exhausting impact on the Belarusian who could not hold the Pole in the second set as Iga clinched the second set in 36 minutes, less than half of what the two players contested in the first set as after the 0-3 mark, Iga won 12 of the next 14 games to emerge victorious.

Vika hit 2 hit aces, committed 6 double faults, converted 4 of the 14 break point opportunities she had and won 62 points. Swiatek also had 2 aces but made only 3 double faults while converting 7 of the 10 breakpoint opportunities as she edged out the Belarusian with 83 points to move into the quarter-finals.

The win over Azarenka is Iga’s 25 straight win and her 8th straight win in Rome as the defending champion looks on course to make a successful title defence that will be her 5th successive title on the Tour and could be her fourth WTA-1000 title of the season with the WTA Tour having played 5 WTA-1000 tournaments so far this season. Iga’s streak is the best on the Tour since Serena Williams went 27 matches unbeaten during the 2015 season when she finished with 3 Grand Slam titles to her name.

Iga will now take on 2019 US Open champ Bianca Andreescu in the quarter-finals in what will be the first-ever meeting between the two Grand Slam champions. Andreescu defeated former Italian Open semi-finalist Petra Martic earlier in the day to book her place in the last-8 of the tournament
