Simona Halep has been having a great tournament so far. The Romanian has also become one of the title favourites given her early exploits in the tournament. The former world no. 1 has had a great run so far with one of the key highlights being her win against World no. 2 Paula Badosa in the second round.
She then went on to beat American teenager Coco Gauff and the no. 14 seed in straight sets and is now set to face Tunisian player Ons Jabeur. Halep is no slouch and is determined to win the title this season as she marches on brushing past the top 10 and top 20 players.
“I think I played very well in the first set. When I stayed super focused at 4-All, that was really important … that was the difference. In the second set, she changed the tactics and she was super, super aggressive. It was really tough to return the balls, but then I just calmed down and I found the rhythm. When asked to speak about her next opponent, Halep is aware that it will be a tough match, but she is expecting to get energy from the crowd that will be crucial for her in the match against Jabeur.
“It’s going to be a totally different match … In Dubai, it was pretty tough because everybody [in the crowd] was with her- But sometimes I get the energy also from the crowd, like here with Paula Badosa, so I don’t struggle with that. I love the energy on the court and I love the atmosphere. It’s good to have people than not to have people, so it will be good.
“She’s different. She’s a great person, first of all, because we get so well together. It’s always nice to talk to her. But every time on the court is a big fight, big battle. I’m expecting a big one next round,” said Halep.
