Leylah Fernandez

Leylah Fernandez had a tough start to this year facing a first-round exit in the Australian Open 2022. She did manage to reach the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open but lost to Martina Trevisan in three sets due to an injury in her right foot. Later, the diagnosis showed a Grade-3 level injury and was advised and it made things worse for her as she was bound to miss the 2022 Wimbledon Championship

As per the Atlanta Open’s tradition, an women’s exhibition match is played before the actual tournament begins as this is a men’s tournament. The Canadian was expected to make her return at the exhibition match at Atlanta Open against Coco Gauff, a former Atlanta resident. The match is scheduled to be held on the 24th of July 2022.

“I wanna wish Coco Gauff good luck”: Leylah Fernandez

Leylah Fernandez and Coco Gauff

Leylah recently shared an update on social media, regarding her injury and her chances of playing at the exhibition match. She was heartbroken to announce that she will have to miss out on the tournament as per her doctor’s advice and she will need more time to recover completely and fully ready to be back on the court. It was very unfortunate for her as she was excited about the match as it was the first time both the players were meeting on a professional level. She said that “I just wanted to give you a quick update. While my foot is recovering, I am following my doctor’s orders, which are that I will not be able to compete for the next coming week. So, I’m very, very sad to say that I will not be in Atlanta.

She further spoke, ” I hope that the fans and the players will enjoy their time at the tournament and I want to wish Coco good luck. Bye. See you next time“. Even though it was not something she had thought about, keeping the rivalry beside, she wished good luck to her opponent Coco Gauff as she will be playing against Taylor Townsend, the replacement of Fernandez. She hopes to play with the American player in the near future.

The Canadian is expected to make her return at the Citi Open which starts early next month.
