Marta Kostyuk vs Anastasia Potapova: Match Preview
Kostyuk continues her dream run at the tennis paradise. The Ukrainian has shown some great form throughout this season and has continued to do so in Indian Wells. Being one of the seeds, she had a first-round bye.
She began her campaign in the second round against Mai Hontama defeating her 6-4, 6-2. Kostyuk then received a walkover by reigning Wimbledon champion and Czech star Marketa Vondrousova. In the fourth round, she took on Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova winning the match 6-4, 6-1.
Before this year, she had not made it past the second round ever at the Indian Wells. But with a spirited run to the quarter-finals so far, she will surely look to go further ahead. She is currently 4-5 at the tournament.
Potapova has been made to do some hard work but she has still prevailed. After getting a bye in the first round, she took on Marie Bouzkova in the second round. She won the tie 7-5, 6-1. Next up, she shot down Nadia Podoroska serving a double breadstick to win the match 6-1, 6-1.
The fourth round was a tricky affair for her as she took on an in-form Italian, Jasmine Paolini. The match went into the third set as the Italian dished out a bagel in the second set. Nevertheless, the young Russian fought her way to win the match 7-5, 0-6, 6-3.
Her third-round appearance in 2023 was her best result at the tournament. But she has improved it considerably this year. The Russian is 6-3 at the coveted ‘fifth Grand Slam’ of tennis.
This will be the third meeting between the two. Potapova currently leads the head-to-head 2-0. They first met in the second round of the 2023 Miami Open where the Russian won in straight-sets. She followed it with a three-set win in the first round of the 2023 Birmingham Open.
Marta Kostyuk vs Anastasia Potapova: Match Prediction
Coming into the tie, Kostyuk is 14-5 for the season with a career hardcourt record of 105-59. Her overall career record across all surfaces stands at 198-113. Potapova is 10-5 in 2024 with a hardcourt record of 91-76 across her career. Her overall career record is currently at 200-138.
Kostyuk has been the better player between the two this season. With a superior hardcourt record as well, the Ukrainian does walk in as the favorite. But with Potapova’s strength being tested in her previous match, she will not go down easily. Nevertheless, Kostyuk looks the one reaching the semi-finals.
