As the Russian and Belarusian players are not allowed to play with their country flags, the scoreboard during the men’s doubles was left blank in the birthplace of Andrey Rublev. A few fans and tennis enthusiasts found it funny, while others found it offensive. Overall, these scenes in the Indian Wells Open drew the attention of the fans who had their individual opinions on it.
Although, Rublev had been supporting peace from the beginning, there are players who had been vocal about the situation. Many Ukrainian players refused to shake hands with the Russians too in the recently concluded tournaments. Wimbledon had recently lifted the ban on the Russian and Belarusian players amidst the international pressures.
Fans already had mixed opinions on removing the flags of these players and now they took to Twitter to the strange scenes of Andrey Rublev with no name. Some of them made a joke about it saying he’s the Messiah.
Fans have made a humorous remark about Indian Wells, suggesting that he appeared out of nowhere, fully grown. Were those childhood videos of him all computer-generated? People also questioned this decision of the organizers as Rublev cannot change the place from where he was born and there is nothing he can do about it now.
Fans come in support of Andrey Rublev after the latest incident
Not just the Russians but a lot of fans across the globe were offended by this action of the organizers. They also suggested to remove the entire option itself since its only an electronic screen. A few fans also suggested they could have just written hospital and laughed about it.
Andrey Rublev had a mediocre season so far by his standards. He has already participated in six tournaments this season with a win-loss record of 9-6. He just reached one final where he was defeated by his compatriot, Daniil Medvedev in the Dubai Tennis Championship.
Rublev’s performance this season has been inconsistent, but his recent second-place finish at a tournament must have boosted his confidence. He will be facing Jiri Lehecka in the first round of the Indian Wells Open. He already lost his men’s doubles match in the tournament.
