Serena Williams, the 40-year-old American professional is undoubtedly the greatest female tennis player of all time, with 23 grand slam titles to her name, Williams has defined a generation of this sport and millions across the world look up to her as their source of inspiration which includes big names from the WTA as well.

Serena recently announced that she will soon be retiring from professionally playing tennis, the ongoing US Open was going to be the final tournament of her career and despite she was unable to go all the way in a fairy tale run, Serena still received a grand reception from New York in her farewell tournament.

Serena Williams started her US Open campaign with a bang as she breezed past Danka Kovinic and Anett Kontaveit but she was bested by Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the tournament where she gave a very emotional farewell speech as she thanked everyone and received an amazing reception from the crowd who were there to celebrate her glamourous career.

Many stars took to social media to pay their tributes to Serena after her retirement, one of whom was Andy Roddick who wrote, “It’s been the pleasure of a lifetime to watch you become what you have. Can’t wait to see what you do next. Thank you my old friend,” Roddick received a lot of backlash for his tweet and the American had to eventually delete it. In response to deleting his tweet, he wrote, “Deleting my Serena tweet from last night. I said “my old friend” in it meaning we’ve known each other a long time. Some people are pretending to be offended by that …… killjoy.” 

Serena had people believing again as she had put in two fantastic performances in the first two rounds of the US Open, she was backed with an insane crowd who made it very tough on her opponents, but Ajla Tomljanovic proved to be too good for the 40-year-old and Serena had to bow out of the tournament.
