Just days before the US Open started, it was alleged that Rafael Nadal’s wife, Maria Francisca Perello, was hospitalized due to some serious pregnancy complications and had to undergo surgery for the same. It came as a shock because Rafa himself wasn’t present back home in Spain due to his commitments for the ongoing US Open.

Rafa was left in a very serious dilemma as it was tough for him to focus on both situations at hand- an ailing wife and the US Open. Recent reports have claimed that both Maria and the baby are out of danger and the pregnancy complications have been solved. But the fact of the matter is that Maria is still under observation in the hospital.

It is also reported that the Nadal family is very angry about this sensitive information being circulated in the media. A video of the moment when Maria could be seen admitted to Hospital Quironsalud Palmaplanas was leaked earlier in the media and naturally, the Nadal family is raging about the same. Adding to that, medical reports of Rafa’s wife from the private clinic were also leaked. Due to all this, the Nadal family is planning to shift Maria to a different clinic to avoid any kind of shock during this hour of pregnancy. They have also threatened to hold the person who leaked the information accountable and sue him.

Given that Rafa has decided to stay in New York to play in the US Open, it could be assumed that both Maria and the baby are out of danger.

Rafael Nadal faced a tough test from wild card Rinky Hijikata in the first round of the US Open. Despite losing the first set, Nadal came back strongly to win the match in four sets 4-6, 6-2,6-3,6-3 in over 3 hours. Nadal looked very rusty in the end but as the match progressed, he was able to gain momentum and hit winners on will.

He will now face Italian Fabio Fognini in the second round on Thursday, an opponent who has beaten him at the US Open previously.
