Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania apologised on Thursday for hurling her racquet into a crowd at the French Open, where it struck a child in the face. Begu’s racquet bounced off the ground and soared towards the fans during the second set of her play against Ekaterina Alexandrova on Court 12 and the child wept uncontrollably.

“It’s an embarrassing moment for me, so I don’t want to talk too much about it. I just want to apologise,” said the 31-year-old after her 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 6-4 win. “My whole career I didn’t do something like this, and I feel really bad and sorry. So I’m just going to say again, sorry for the incident and it was just an embarrassing moment for me.”

After bouncing her racket into the French Open crowd and hitting a kid, Romanian tennis player Irina-Camelia Begu received a code violation for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Begu was playing Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia in the second round when the event occurred. Alexandrova had won the first set 7-6, but Begu came back to win the second set 6-3. Begu trailed by two games when the match entered a third set decider.

Begu threw her racket against the clay court of Roland-Garros in despair. After that, it bounced off the surface and into the crowd, where it collided with a toddler. The crowd gasped as the umpire leapt from his chair to summon a supervisor, halt the contest, and ensure the child’s safety. Begu, who had been warned for her actions, also went to check on the youngster. After the match, she posed for photographs with him.
