Women’s tennis has been scrutinized for a while now, as its level seems to have gone below par in recent years. Apart from a dominant number and a handful of good players, others aren’t really creating any sort of impact on the court. Italian Davis Cup captain Corrado Barazzutti recently spoke about the general level of women’s tennis in the modern world after Venus Williams win over Camilla Giorgi.

The 43 year old Venus Williams stunned everyone as she overcame a top 50 player in the form of Camilla Giorgi. With that being said, there is no denying the fact that the tennis proffesional fought hard and showed great levels of fitness. On this, Barazzutti said, “Venus Williams was a champion but if she is still able to win matches on the major circuit at 43, beating a top 50 player like Camila Giorgi, it indicates that the general level of women’s tennis has dropped.”

However, the Italian can’t get over the fact that she, at the age of 43, defeated a young top-50 player. He feels that the women’s side of the game doesn’t have a great deal of consistency and competitiveness. Only a handful of names knock on the door in the final rounds of big events. That certainly is not the direction in which the women’s side of the sport would want to go.

Is women’s tennis all about the dominant world no. 1?

From Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert to Steffi Graf and Monica Seles, there was a time in women’s tennis when the competition was at its best. Later, it went on to the Williams sisters, who were occasionally troubled by the likes of Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka.

However, from the back end of Serena Williams’ career, the women’s side of the game became a lot about the dominant number 1. Serena would almost win everything she competed in. It later shifted to Naomi Osaka, and the template was followed by Ash Barty as well.

All number 1s create that big void between them and the rest. Iga Swiatek finds herself in a similar space with massive levels of consistency. She is occasionally troubled by Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, and a few others.

However, it is Swiatek who is crowned champion on most days. This is not ideal for women’s sports. It needs more players who can show great levels of consistency and challenge the number one on regular occasions. There are many promising talents; however, their effectiveness is a question. The biggest question currently is, Who will dethrone Swiatek?
