Novak Djokovic vs Stan Wawrinka: Preview

After a shaky start to the season, Novak Djokovic finally looks settled and at peace. He was denied entry into Australia due to his vaccination status and hence was forced to skip the Australian Open. He thus started his season in Dubai where he lost in the quarterfinals before he was once again denied entry into the USA. He wasn’t allowed to play the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters. He then started his clay season in Monte Carlo where he lost his opening match before he bounced back on home soil, reaching the final of the Serbian Open.

He then reached the semifinal of the Madrid Masters where he lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. In Rome this week, he defeated Aslan Karatsev in straight sets 6-3,6-2 in the second round.

3-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka came back on tour after a year’s break due to injury a month ago in Marbella where he lost his opening match. He then played a good 3-set match at Monte Carlo against Alexander Bublik which he lost. He entered the Rome Masters courtesy his protected ranking and registered his first comeback win against 14th seed Reilly Opelka in the first round. In the second round, he defeated Laslo Djere in three sets 7-6(8),3-6,6-4 to book a date with Djokovic.

This will be the 26th meeting between the duo. Djokovic leads the H2H 19-6. They last met at the 2019 US Open where Wawrinka won comfortably.

Djokovic is the obvious favorite without second thought. He is finally close to his peak and Wawrinka is no where near to his best. The Swiss is still finding his groove and despite beating Djokovic numerous times on the big stage, he will have very little chance given the way Djokovic has evolved in recent times. Expect a good battle with some nostalgia, but Djokovic should have an easy outing in the Round of 16.
