Nicola Pietrangeli was born on 11 September 1933 and is a former Italian tennis player. He is considered by many to be Italy’s greatest tennis champion. The Italian retired in 1973 just after 5 years of becoming a professional. He had a 687-278 win-loss record and a total No. of 44 career titles to his name. His peak came in the year 1959-60 in which the Italian won the French Open twice in men’s singles and reached his highest ranking of No. 3 in that time only.

The 88-year-old has given his opinion in which he called Lorenzo Musetti, ‘the best Italian of a current generation’ which must have sent shockwaves to two of his other countrymen; Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini who are by far better than Lorenzo if we consider the statistics and the titles they have won. Sinner, who is the same age as Lorenzo has already won 5 titles compared to only 1 won by Lorenzo.

“He is the best Italian of the current generation” Nicola Pietrangeli on Lorenzo Musetti

Pietrangeli was recently questioned by ANSA on the first career title won by his young compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in Hamburg Open. Nicola answered, “I called Musetti to give him my compliments. He reminds me of old players and there are no limits to what he can do. I must have said congratulations to him 10 times. He was fantastic. He played like a champ. In my opinion, the Italian (of the current generation) plays the best tennis.

“I like him a lot because he is very technical and plays less with power, which makes him different from others and reminds players of my time. Fantastic,” added Nicola. Musetti has recently crowned the Hamburg Open champion after beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final by 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

The Spaniard who has already won four titles this year was the favourite to win the finals but it was the Italian’s day at the court that stopped Alcaraz from winning his fifth title and handing him his first loss in a Tour final. Matteo Berrettini also reached the finals of the Swiss Open but finished as a runner because of Caper Ruud‘s phenomenal comeback in the finals.
