Venus Williams and Serena Williams
Serena Williams, one of the greatest female athletes of all time is the epitome of hard work and passion which has brought many laurels to her career of nearly three decades. She is a passionate player who has been proved time and again her dominance over the years. She dropped a shocker when she announced her retirement from the competitive world and will probably play her final Grand Slam tournament at the 2022 US Open in front of her home crowd and at the place where she won her first singles title in the year 1999.
The 23-time singles Grand Slam champion holds the record for the most number of singles Grand Slam titles in the Open era. She made her comeback to the court after a year at the grass-court season but faced a shocking defeat in the first round at Wimbledon. She started off on a good note with a comfortable win in the first round at the Canadian Open but was soon crushed out of the tournament facing defeat in the next round followed by another disappointing loss against Emma Raducanu at the Western & Southern Open. Serena Williams has managed to win only one out of four matches but it gave the much-required court time going into the final innings.
“It’s still business, she still wants to play and win!”Venus Williams on Serena Williams ahead of her final matches at the US Open
Serena Williams has received a wild-card entry to the US Open in the doubles category as a pair with her sister Venus Williams and they will play after a gap of four years. The Williams sisters duo are an undefeated pair in the Grand Slam finals and together both have won 14 doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals. During an interview with both the sisters present, upon being asked about US Open being her final tournament Serena said “I think so but who knows?“. Further, when asked if she would like to play next year, she instantly replied “You never know. I’ve learned in my career, never say never.“
Serena even opened up about post-retirement plans devoting her time to her family and other activities than tennis. She spoke that “The whole journey is going to be emotional. I love what I do, there’s nothing about me not loving my job. I’ve been playing it my whole life. It’s very emotional to evolve into something new.”
She further revealed that she and Venus don’t talk much about tennis and don’t interfere much with each other’s decisions but Venus gave in a little piece of advice talking about her retirement decision. Venus added, “It’s still business, she still wants to play, she still wants to win. When she walks onto the court she wants to be focussed-so this is the moment now for her to do that, like all the other moments, and then when that moment is over, then the next moment will be here. So that’s what it is.“
