“It’s kind of a big mental hurdle to jump through” Taylor Fritz’s thoughts on the biggest challenges faced against Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer
Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz is all set to return to action at the Citi Open 2022 after his stint at Wimbledon 2022 where he lost to Rafael Nadal in a thrilling and nerve-wracking five-set match in the quarterfinals. Fritz had entered his Wimbledon quarterfinal encounter against Rafael Nadal in good spirits as he had already defeated the Spaniard in their previous meeting which was at the finals of the Indian Wells Masters event. The Spaniard suffered an abdominal injury during the match and was in a lot of pain but despite Fritz’s solid effort, Nadal somehow managed to cross the finish line.
Ranked World number 12, his career-best in the ATP rankings, Fritz has 3 ATP Tour titles to his name but is yet to win a Grand Slam title. He was the junior singles champion at the US Open in 2015. He reached his maiden ATP final in his third career event, a feat achieved only by John Isner of reaching an ATP final in fewer career events. He has won 29 of his 40 matches this year.
“I felt super-confident that I could get over the hurdle of one of these really big names” Taylor Fritz’s biggest learnings on his loss at the Wimbledon
Ahead of the Washington tournament matches beginning soon, Fritz at a press conference, spoke about the biggest learnings from the quarter-finals match at the SW19. He has become super confident in himself and could see a different side of him altogether. He spoke, “I felt like what I took away from that game was that mentally, I proved to myself that I could get over the hurdle of one of these really big names.“
When it comes to playing against the Big-3, Fritz has a disappointing 0-5 against Novak Djokovic, 1-2 with Rafael Nadal, and a 0-2 win-loss record against Roger Federer. The three players have shown their dominance over the years with 63 of the last 77 Grand Slams among them. Owing to his win and much-needed belief after defeating Nadal at the Indian Wells Masters event, the American is sure that he will be able to achieve new targets by defeating the three of them someday at the Grand Slam tournaments. He added “I had a lot of big wins and I played a lot of good matches, but never against Djokovic, Rafa, Federer. I think that’s kind of a big mental hurdle to jump through.“
