The American professional tennis player Sofia Kenin has a career-high WTA ranking of No. 4 in the world. She was the 2020 WTA Player of the Year, an award she received after winning the 2020 Australian Open and finishing as a runner-up at the 2020 French Open. Kenin has won five WTA singles titles and won two WTA doubles titles, including the 2019 China Open at the Premier Mandatory level with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

The Citi Open match against Camila Osorio marked Kenin’s first appearance in an official match on the court since the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, where she lost in the first round. Since then, Kenin has been struggling with an ankle injury that has resisted her from competitions during the last few months. Before Citi Open, a few days ago Sofia Kenin was seen playing an exhibition match against Coco Gauff at the Atlanta Open.

Kenin is now fully recovered and ready to get back on the court. In a recent interview, she explained how it felt like living through all of that: “it is something that we should expect, many people have told me that it is even normal to have the pressure after winning a Grand Slam or making the final of a big tournament. I put more pressure on myself because I felt that people wanted me to win every day, but that’s not realistic. It’s not realistic unless you’re Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Serena Williams.”

Speaking on the fact that she was earlier coached by her father said, “I had great success with my father, but I felt that it was time to move on and make my own decisions in terms of my tennis career. I think for now I just need time, to grow as a person and then we’ll see what happens in the future.”

The 23-year-old American has been knocked out of the Citi Open after an extraordinary performance by Osorio in their round of 32 matches by 7-6, 6-1. Sofia’s comeback didn’t go as she would have wanted it but it has cleared one thing for her fans they will finally be able to see their star more often on the tennis courts.
