“It’s only a matter of time before she wins a slam,” Naomi Osaka speaks highly of Coco Gauff despite losing to her in San Jose
Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff
After missing the grass season owing to an Achilles injury and severing ties with her coach Wim Fissette, former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka is attempting to regain her best form. Gauff, 18, wants to keep climbing the ranks after reaching the French Open final two months ago. Osaka has won four Grand Slam tournaments, but she has never been a year-round force to be reckoned with on the WTA Tour. She only has three previous career victories, and her majors were all earned in different years.
Osaka has struggled to consistently perform at a high level, but she has succeeded in doing so at some of the biggest events on the tour. It’s hard to tell how far she is from repeating that action. Although she played no matches on grass and only one match on clay during the season, she reached the final of her final hard-court competition at the Miami Open in March.
“Just looking to see what she’s improved” Naomi Osaka looks forward to her much anticipated match with Coco Gauff
Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff met for the fourth time in their careers at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose. Gauff get the better of Osaka in straight sets 6-4,6-4.
She has defeated Gauff twice in a row, twice at American venues (the 2019 US Open and the 2021 Western & Southern Open), but this time, she lost to Gauff in a rather unexpected way.
When asked about Gauff, she said, “She’s been on the tour for a while and I think people don’t know that because of how young she is. She’s improving every year, so I think there’s a lot that she’s learning and it’s only a matter of time before she wins a Slam.” She signed off by saying, “The last time we played in Cincy, I was just really tense there…I’m just looking to see what she’s improved. When I go on the court, I know who I am, so I just want to see what she’s going to bring. I think that’s one thing that I have above her is that I have a lot of experience. I’ve definitely played more matches than her, so it’s going to be interesting to watch her grow.”
