“It’s really hurtful,” Mark Woodforde reveals how his relationship with Todd Woodbridge has deteriorated

The Woodies

One of the greatest Australian doubles players, Mark Woodforde, reveals how his friendship with Todd Woodbridge has ended. Mark and Todd are the professional tennis doubles team from Australia that played together from 1991 to 2002. During their careers, they won 11 Grand Slam doubles titles, including six Wimbledon titles and two Olympic medals in doubles.

The duo was widely regarded as one of the greatest doubles teams in tennis history, and their successful partnership helped popularize doubles tennis. They are fondly called “The Woodies” by many fans and the tennis world. However, things went sideways when the duo split up in 2002 after a fantastic run spanning a decade.

Recently Mark spoke in a podcast and revealed why the duo split up despite having such a great record on the court. He said “I would love to be able to play some more of the legends events together, but it’s just at a position … it is where it is right now. For someone you could rely upon for as many years and have great fun and success and joy with, to be at this stage now, it’s really hurtful – I’m still the same person.”

Speaking in The Soda Room podcast he said that they have nothing to talk about. He also wished he could do anything to repair their damaged relationship. Ever since they split up professionally, they did not maintain a healthy personal relationship either. However, Mark is hoping they could repair the damage caused to their relationship and be friends again.

Mark Woodforde upset over Todd Woodbridge for choosing a different partner

Mark revealed in 2020 that he felt betrayed when Woodbridge decided to play on the Legends Tour with Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman instead of him. After Woodforde retired from tennis in 2000, Todd teamed up with Bjorkman, and they found more success on the court, winning another five grand slams. However, Mark felt that their success was nowhere near the same level as the Woodies.

Speaking in the BreakPoint podcast, Mark opened up about this decision from Todd and said “It’s probably one of the greatest quandaries right now. I wish Todd and I were in a better place. I guess The Woodies drifted into the background for him and he’s developing his own brand. So it’s disappointing for me, I still play the legends events so it’s kind of a head-scratcher to turn up and we’re not playing together.”
