Juan Carlos Ferrero had a tough time facing the “Big 3′ of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as he struggled against all of them and has a very poor record against them on different surfaces. Despite taking retirement Ferrero is still thinking about the ‘Big 3’ because of his apprentice Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish teenager is one of the most talented players around in the Men’s circuit and his wins at Miami and Barcelona have got everyone raving about his potential.

Therefore speaking about the ‘Big 3’ in an ATP podcast on tour, Ferrero heaped praise on the three legends and feels that it is incredible for them to dominate the circuit for so long and at the same time stay relevant for decades after decades. “One of the things that impressed me the most about Nadal, Federer and Djokovic is that for years they managed to keep the same intensity week after week. It’s very difficult to achieve,” Ferrero said in the podcast.

The Spaniard is currently in his homeland where his apprentice Carlos Alcaraz is performing at the Madrid Open and according to a few experts Alcaraz is the favourite to win the Madrid Open after lifting the title in Barcelona. However Juan Carlos Ferrero wants him to go one match at a time and after winning against Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 7-5, the youngster will take on ninth seed Cameron Norrie in the round of 16.

Juan Carlos Ferrero then shared a unique revelation when he credited the ‘Big 3’ for their excellent adaptive intelligence, something that they use even today to skip a few tournaments on tour and only play the important ones or the ones required for them. “ Play fewer tournaments at the end of your career, but play very well (the tournaments you play), Rafa, Roger and Novak know how to do it perfectly. They play 10 to 12 tournaments a year, and they aim to win a Grand Slam. They can play at a high level in those few tournaments, which is very difficult to do,” Juan Carlos Ferrero added.

Currently, both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have returned on tour after taking a break for different circumstances. They are participating at the Madrid Open as they look to get match practice ahead of the Roland Garros. While Djokovic is all set to defend the Roland Garros title that he won last year, Nadal on the other hand is looking to clinch his 14th Roland Garros by beating the Serb.
