Former World No 1 Andy Murray had a tough time over the last few years. He had to manage injuries that led him to miss out on most of the seasons. Due to this, his rankings dropped drastically, and is currently ranked 49th in the world. However, he always found a way to return to the professional tennis circuit. His coach, Ivan Lendl makes a huge revelation regarding his form and fitness levels.
Murray lost in the finals of the Stuttgart Open despite not dropping a set throughout the tournament. Moreover, he hasn’t even had effective performances in the Grand Slams of the year. His performance dipped because of his constant injuries, especially the hip surgery that restrained him to move freely on the court.
Lendl helped Murray win three Grand Slam title wins along with making him reach the No 1 rank. After a few trials with other coaches, the former American player was brought back into the World No 49’s team at the start of 2022. It is their third term of association and is confident regarding the Brit’s form. He claims that Murray would surely make an impact in the upcoming season while shutting down all retirement rumors.
“He’s here, he’s ready. He’s the one who has to say what he’s going to do. But I worked with him for 20 days, from late November to December 10 in Boca and I didn’t see any sign that he was going to tour farewell. I wouldn’t be here if it was,” said Ivan Lendl during an interview.
Andy Murray looks forward to starting his 2023 campaign
The 3-time Grand Slam champion has been a commendable player but couldn’t register much success on the ATP tour. He shot to fame when he defeated Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2012 US Open. He became the first British major singles champion since Virginia Wade in 1977. He is also a two-time medallist at the Olympics.
The former World No 1 faced the most competition from the Big 3. He has played in the Grand Slam finals 11 times and managed to win thrice. But the defeats came either against Djokovic or Roger Federer. Andy Murray will kickstart his 2023 season with his participation at the Australian Open. It will be his 15th appearance at Down Under in his career. He also even reached the final a 5 number of times and the last time he played in the finals was in the year 2016.
For his selfless contribution to the people of Ukraine in the war conditions, he was honored with the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award recipient at the 2022 ATP Awards. He helped in whichever way possible to make the conditions for the Ukrainian people better. He donated £500,000 of his prize money to help the children affected due to the Russia- Ukraine war. Murray even worked with Unicef to provide necessary medical supplies and development kits in Ukraine.
