Australian showman Nick Kyrgios had to dig deep in the first round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships as he defeated local wildcard Paul Jubb in five sets 3-6,6-1,7-5,6-7(3),7-5 to reach the second round. Kyrgios, who is one of the dark horses of the tournament, didn’t expect to have such an extended outing in the first round but was relieved at the end.

During the match, Kyrgios had a lot of heated moments with the crowd. After losing the first set, he was very frustrated and was pissed off by the constant booing from the crowd. A certain spectator in general annoyed Kyrgios and he even demanded that the person be kicked out of the stadium to the chair umpire. Kyrgios said that the person was throwing racial slurs at him but due to lack of evidence, the person couldn’t be thrown out of the stadium.

Kyrgios was constantly interacting with that person and after winning the match, he spitted toward the individual in disgust before going towards the net for the customary handshake.

After the match, Kyrgios talked about the incident and confirmed that he did spit toward that specific person because he was disrespecting him. He said that he would never do it to someone who was supporting him. He then added that he is okay with being on the receiving end but he doesn’t understand why he is penalized when he gives back.

“Of one of the people disrespecting me, yes,” Kyrgios said when asked about the incident. “I would not be doing that to someone who was supporting me. Look, I’m okay with receiving a lot of it. But what I don’t understand is as soon as I give it back, for instance in Stuttgart I gave it back, I got a game penalty.”

He said that he has been dealing with hate for a long time and hence he doesn’t feel like he owed anything to that person. Kyrgios said that the person just came to spectate the match to irritate him.

“Today, as soon as I won the match, I turned to him… I’ve been dealing with hate and negativity for a long time, so I don’t feel like I owed that person anything. Like, he literally came to the match to literally just, like, not even support anyone really. It was more just to, like, stir up and disrespect. That’s fine. But if I give it back to you, then that’s just how it is,” he said.
