After the 2023 season comes to an end, the ATP will celebrate the best players, and tournaments during the season. This is the time when WTA and ATP announce the winners of the awards.
Both the WTA and the ATP have announced a few of the winners of the awards. On Wednesday, the ATP announced the winner of the Comeback Player of the Year award. Jan-Lennard Struff is the winner of the award.
Struff was nominated alongside Dominik Koepfer, Gael Monfils and Alexander Zverev. The Comeback Player Award is an award for the players who have come back to the court after a serious injury and performed well. All of the three players have performed well throughout the season. However, Struff voted them out to win the award. Struff had an amazing season which saw him rise 146 places to achieve his career-high ranking of 21.
In an interview after winning the Award, Struff said,
I'm very, very happy and excited to win the Comeback Player of the Year award for 2023. I was nominated with Sascha, Domi and Gael, which for me deserve the award so much as well for their season, so congrats for this.
A comeback to remember for ages for Jan-Lennard Struff
Jan-Lennard Struff had a good start to the season after performing well in the ATP Masters 1000. This also helped the German player to boost his rankings. Struff reached the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo.
However, after this Struff had to miss three months owing to a hip injury. In those three months, the first few weeks were so severe that Struff couldn’t even hold a racket. After a recovery from injury, Struff made a smashing return in the season. He reached the third tour semi-final of the season in Sofia. This strong comeback from injury in the same season is a praiseworthy task.
Apart from Struff various other players have bagged accolades during the ATP awards. Jannik Sinner has been chosen as the ‘2023 ATP Fans’ Favorite’ as he became the only player to win the award without winning a major title in the season. Andrey Rublev and his countrymen have been voted as the ‘2023 ATP Fans Favorite Doubles’ Team’ while Felix Auger Aliassime bags the Humanitarian ATP awards.
