Tomorrow at the Rod Laver Arena, Jannik Sinner will be facing Russian powerhouse Daniil Medvedev in a bid to clinch his first-ever Grand Slam title. This is the first time the Italian has reached the final of a Grand Slam. Some of the credit for Sinner’s overall achievement also goes to his coach Darren Cahill.
Although Cahill is probably the reason for Jannik’s stellar victories including his semi-final win against Novak Djokovic, in the coach’s words it is ‘the worst job ever’. Cahill was present at the press conference before the AO men’s final along with other coaches. In a light-hearted moment, Sinner appeared at the press conference and added a tinge of joviality.
With a mischievous grin, the World No. 4 asked, “How is it to coach Jannik?” as he playfully turned the tables on his mentor. In response, Cahill who is known for his quick wit and humour, teased the young athlete by saying:
It's the worst job. The pay is low and you lose at card games.Darren Cahill’s response
Cahill’s tongue-in-cheek remark drew laughter from those in attendance
The Italian’s coach went on about how Sinner kept winning the card games and how he kept winning money and enjoying the time of his life because of this. Sinner, evidently enjoying the banter, stormed out of the room hilariously, leaving behind a happy environment.
Novak Djokovic’s past comments on ATP Coach of the Year Darren Cahill resurface
Djokovic’s prior remarks on the ATP Coach of the Year winners resurfaced following his loss to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open semifinals.
Djokovic was not pleased when Sinner’s coaches, Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, were named ATP Coaches of the Year in 2023. At the time, he expressed his displeasure with the decision, especially because his own coach, Goran Ivanisevic was also nominated.
Sinner’s outstanding performance in 2023 likely influenced his coaches’ win. The Italian won the ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto, reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time, and qualified for the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals. In addition, he won four tour-level titles and the ATP Fan’s Favourite Award, resulting in an amazing 64-15 win-loss record for the year.
In a now-viral comment, the Serbian sarcastically congratulated Sinner’s coaches while subtly highlighting his own coach’s achievements. Djokovic remarked:
Congratulations to Darren and Simone for a great season with Jannik. Goran, I guess we need to win 4/4 slams for you to maybe (just maybe) be considered coach of the year.Novak Djokovic wrote on X
Although, Djokovic’s coach Ivanisevic was among the nominees but did not win the prize. With three Grand Slam wins and 12 ATP crowns, including his eighth ATP Finals success, Djokovic felt his coach deserved more credit.
