Jannik Sinner secured one of his biggest victories by defeating world number 3, Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the China Open. Displaying immense skills and energy on the court, the Italian held the Russian in straight sets to set his hand on the prestigious golden trophy.

In a post-match conference, Sinner attributed his win over former world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz as the real reason for him to overcome Medvedev. “Beating Carlos gave me a lot of confidence going into this final. Carlos & Daniil are two totally different players, so I had to adjust some things. I think that was the key,” he shared.

The extent of his determination could be measured from his match against Grigor Dimitrov. The quarterfinal match lasted for 3 sets, with Sinner giving his all. The toll the match took on him was seen when the young Italian threw up during the 3rd set. But ultimately, he emerged as the winner.

Sinner soars in victory

It took Jannik Sinner 7 attempts to defeat the Russian powerhouse. Having lost to Medvedev 6 consecutive times, one might think he would have lost his confidence. But instead, he fought hard and earned a great victory 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/2).

The match began in full energy. Neither of them was able to break the other’s service, but Sinner blew a good chance in the opening set when he hit an overhead volley long on break point. The tie-break was a different story, with the Italian racing to a 5-0 lead and sealing the deal when Medvedev sent a forehand into the net.

In set two, a similar standoff happened, with the first thirteen games going with serve before Sinner once again showed his poise when it mattered. With a clever drop ball, he took the lead in the tie-break and never looked back, unleashing a magnificent cross-court passing shot on match point and pounding down a Medvedev serve to win in front of a loud crowd.
