Toni Nadal, after analyzing Jannik Sinner‘s dominating win against Daniil Medvedev, believes that the Italian’s biggest threat is no longer Medvedev but rather 2023 Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Rafael Nadal‘s uncle and former coach believes that the fourth straight win over the Russian is a confirmation that the Italian is now a serious major title challenger.
Jannik Sinner, who defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final of the 2024 Australian Open, is the latest champion of a Grand Slam event. The Italian showed strength and pace, defeating World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. The young tennis professional now stands as the only player to have defeated Djokovic and Medvedev three times in three months.
However, Carlos Alcaraz, who has yet to get to any major title final since his Wimbledon victory, is who Toni Nadal believes is the main rival, with both players tight on head-to-head with Sinner leading 4-3.
Toni explained in an editorial commentary in the Spanish newspaper El Pais that the Italian has taken the significant step to legitimize his role as Carlos Alcaraz’s main rival once and for all.
When a player's shots are no longer enough to win, he has no choice but to resort to tactics. But Medvedev didn't even have a choice. The Italian's power and precision completely destroyed him.Toni Nadal said
Once the Sinner & Medvedev match was over, I commented on the match with my children. I fear that this big and significant step could change the landscape of tennis in the coming years. Although Sinner had long been considered Alcaraz's most likely rival, he lacked a victory of that magnitude to back it up. He will be our tennis player's biggest rival in the coming years.Continuing further, he added
Jannik Sinner, who led his country (Italy) to their first Davis Cup title, has become a favorite player to win more titles. The 21-year-old, who is known for his great serve and forehand, has been on the lips of many legends, hailing his style of play as unique.
Carlos Alcaraz is hoping for his first title in the 2024 season
Carlos Alcaraz is hoping to claim his first ATP title of the season at the Rio Open. The Spanish star, who has yet to win any title since his Wimbledon triumph, is hoping to clinch the grand title in Brazil, the title he won in 2022.
With that being said, it seems like now Alcaraz will put his disappointing elimination in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open behind him and get the result that many fans hoped he would. However, the likes of Stan Wawrinka, Cameron Norrie, and Arthur Fils are among the 32 men’s singles players to compete for the Rio crown.
Notably, although it seems like an easy victory for the Spanish star, his downfall has always been unexpected in most competitions. The Rio Open starts on February 19th, 2024.
