World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev was knocked out of the 2024 Miami Open after he lost to Jannik Sinner in the semifinal. Although Medvedev was a defending champion, he was thrashed in straight sets by his Italian counterpart. Sinner beat Medvedev 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the final of the Masters tournament.
It was the fifth consecutive win for the Italian over the World No. 4 player. Sinner dominated Medvedev throughout the match. In fact, the Italian has dropped only one set so far in the tournament. Such has been Sinner’s dominance.
The World No. 2 has won 19 of the twenty matches he has played this season. The only defeat for Sinner came in the Indian Wells Open semifinal when he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. Barring that match, the Italian has looked undefeatable and Medvedev pointed out the same thing in his post-match press conference.
When the Russian was asked about Sinner’s growth, Medvedev highlighted that the 22-year-old has come up the ranks very quickly.
Well, yeah, I was not there when Big 3 came on tour, so for sure me, I didn't see anyone, let's say -- well, Carlos. Yeah, Carlos, the way he went up, I think went up different way. Carlos maybe a bit faster. But in a way, they both went up very young and kind of straight to the top. And, yeah, as I say, he's playing well now. He doesn't miss much and he can make winners so well. He serves very well.Daniil Medvedev said.
Daniil Medvedev explains why Jannik Sinner will be a tough opponent
Further talking about Jannik Sinner‘s evolution, Daniil Medvedev pointed out why it would become really tough to beat the Italian. The Russian pointed out the great things about Sinner’s gameplay. He then announced that he will try to challenge the Italian when they play next time.
Medvedev said that having observed the changes Sinner had made to his game, he would try to push the 22-year-old to his limits. The Russian then said that if Sinner manages to stick to his strengths, then it would be really tough for his opponents.
Even today the few moments where maybe I could have come back in the match here and there, 130 on the line, slice on the line, second serve on the line, deep, and yeah, that's tough to play when he plays like this. You know, the next time I'm gonna play I'm gonna try for sure to play better, maybe a bit different, and let's see if he manages to continue to play the way he does because if he manages, it's going to be tough for many other players, yeah.Daniil Medvedev declared.
Notably, Sinner has been playing some top-class tennis in the past few months. The Italian has defeated top players without much fuss. While he has toppled Medvedev twice this season, Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinal and eventually went on to win the title.
