The wait is finally over. Italian player Jannik Sinner defeated this year’s hard-court champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets and grabbed himself the glamorous trophy of the 2023 China Open.
Sinner’s previous meetings with the Russian never ended well, as he faced six straight losses from Medvedev. But he broke the vicious streak and secured his career-high rank of World No. 4 at the ATP ranking.
As per OptaAce, a Twitter page that posts ATP and WTA stats, Sinner’s victory in Beijing makes him the first Italian to claim multiple top fives at a single ATP event on a hard court since 1973, when the ATP rankings were introduced.
Sinner started the 2023 season by being placed in the 17th position in the rankings. He reached his first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open but lost to none other than Medvedev. In the Miami Open, he defeated Carlos Alcaraz to reach the final but ultimately lost to Medvedev again. On the grass court at Wimbledon, he again reached the semifinals but lost to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
Sinner defeated Alcaraz again in straight sets and reached the final. He won his debut China Open, which is also considered the hardest ATP 500 Masters, and engraved his name in history.
Sinner thanks Medvedev after winning the China Open trophy
Creating history, after winning what is considered one of the hardest ATP 500 tournaments, Jannik Sinner thanked Medvedev for letting him win a match after six consecutive losses.
During the post-match speech, Sinner laughingly said, “Thank you Daniil for letting me win at least one match. Thank you for making me a much better player. We had to work a lot in order to defeat you.”

Jannik recognized Medvedev’s strength and acknowledged how difficult it is, not just for him but for other players as well, to defeat the Russian powerhouse. Medvedev also took a playful jibe at the Italian, calling his win a third-time luck. “3rd time lucky. third final this year between us. You managed to win it. Great match,” he said jokingly.
As the results are out, the tennis world will be eager to see more matches between these two sensations.
