World No.7 Jannik Sinner hit the ground running at the National Tennis Center in Beijing to continue his decent start to the Asian swing as he defeated Grigor Dimitrov to reach the semi-final of the ATP 500 China Open on Monday. Sinner, seeded 6th, defeated the World No.20, 6-4,3-6,6-2 in 2 hours 30 minutes to get his 47th win of the year.
The Italian missed chances to finish off the match in straight sets as he failed to capitalize on 8 break-point opportunities in the second set. Although he managed to clinch the tie in the final set, Sinner had an awkward moment at the start of the third set as he threw up in a bin.
Revealing the reason behind the incident, the Italian remarked during the post-match speech on the court, “It was a very difficult evening, the level of the match was very high. At one point, I didn’t feel well, maybe I ate poorly, so I vomited. In any case, I am happy with the way I managed the match, especially in the third set.”
Sinner returned to the tour for the first time after his 4th round defeat at the US Open, at the China Open. The 22-year-old skipped his national team duties as he withdrew from last month’s Davis Cup. The World No.7 struggled with cramps in his 5-set loss to Alexander Zverev at the US Open.
With the win, Sinner has set up a blockbuster encounter against his rival and World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final on Tuesday.

Carlos Alcaraz shares his thoughts on semi final clash against Jannik Sinner
Talking about a potential semi-final encounter against Sinner, Alcaraz told the press even before Sinner’s match ended, “I think a match against Sinner is something everyone wants to see. We have played great matches on big stages, every time we have faced each other we have shown a very high level of tennis. The level we show on the court is incredible, I think everyone enjoys our matches.” The 1st seed defeated Casper Ruud, 7th seed, 6-4,6-2 to book his spot in the semi final.
Often proclaimed as the leaders of the ‘Next Gen’, Alcaraz and Sinner have faced each other 6 times. The pair faced off twice at the Sunshine Double earlier this year. Alcaraz defeated the Italian in the semi-final of Indian Wells in straight sets. Sinner avenged the loss at the same stage of the Miami Open. Their most memorable encounter came in the quarter-final of the US Open last year. Alcaraz edged Sinner to win the marathon 5-setter en route to his first Grand Slam title.
While Alcaraz has already qualified for the year-end ATP Finals to be played in Turin, Sinner is the next in line to qualify. If Sinner manages to book his spot in the final tomorrow, the Italian will reach a career-high ranking of 4.
