Stefanos Tsitsipas overcame Jannik Sinner in a five-setter in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open. The exhausting four-hour match saw the odds swing from one side to the other almost at every point as Sinner threatened to complete what would have been the best comeback of this year’s tournament.

Tennis fans around the world were treated to a brilliant match between two outstanding players. Any neutral would have enjoyed a game of this quality. The reaction on social media reflected the excitement of the fans. On wrote, “What a match…amazing to watch…groundstrokes are amazing from both..” Another concurred with the opinion and noted, “Unlucky for @janniksin just hadn’t the strength at the end. Having won the first two sets, Tsitsipas slipped up. He lost the following two sets to Sinner. This gave hope to fans of the Italian who were keen for their man to get a ‘remontada.’ But it was not to be. Tsitsipas played excellently in the last set to take the win. The sudden change in Sinner’s play was shocking to many as he slowed down and didn’t play to the level he previously displayed.

Multiple fans took shots at Sinner while praising Tsitsipas for his endurance. One wrote, “Sinner became submissive all of a sudden.. But Tsitsipas looks pretty solid. Particularly BH [backhand] has improved a lot.”  Another agreed with the sentiment, commenting, “Very bad 5th set by Sinner. Was off all set long. Couldn’t find the line to save his life.”

The match will go down as one of the best of this edition of the Slam. Many also predicted that the two players would be battling at the top for many years to come. Tsitsipas progresses to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. He will be one of the primary challengers to favorite Novak Djokovic. He is the highest-seeded player in the men’s singles still in the tournament.

An unlikely coincidence was pointed out by many after Tsitsipas’ win. In the last two Grand Slam tournaments, players who have knocked out Jannik Sinner have gone on to win the Slam. It led to plenty questioning if that could be the case in Melbourne too.

Sinner crashed out to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets at the quarter-final of the 2022 US Open. The World No.1 then famously went on to win the Slam and end the year as No.1. The same thing happened at Wimbledon. Sinner was once again knocked out in the quarters. This time to 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. The Serbian legend secured his 7th Wimbledon title later that week. Now that Tsitsipas has defeated him, many wonder if the Greek star could continue the streak.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has a better shot at winning it all with many contenders out before the tournament’s second week. Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud, the only two players seeded above him, are out already. He now faces a significant challenge only from Djokovic, a nine-time winner at the Australian Open.
