Carlos Alcaraz was defeated in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Canadian Open, as he lost to Tommy Paul in three sets. The world number one looked far from convincing all week in Toronto, as he barely managed to get past the finishing line against Hubert Hurkacz in the last 16.
With Daniil Medvedev also facing a quarterfinal exit, this leaves Jannik Sinner the firm favorite to claim the title. The Italian claimed a close three-set victory over Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals, after he received a walkover in the last 16. Jannik Sinner responded to claims of him being under additional pressure to win the tournament after Carlos Alcaraz’s exit.
Jannik Sinner stated that he is firmly focused on his next match against Tommy Paul, as he presents a different problem. The seventh seed believes that the American comes with the added confidence of having defeated the world number one in three sets in the previous round.

Jannik Sinner has played some of his best tennis on hard courts this season. The Italian has kickstarted the second leg of the hard court season in a positive manner, as he has booked a place in the semifinals of the 2023 Canadian Open.
Jannik Sinner was expected to face Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals, as the duo have played some memorable matches in the past 12 months. They went head to head against each other at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters earlier this year, with both matches being played at a very high level.
Nevertheless, the seventh seed remains wary of the threat presented by Tommy Paul in the semifinals. “For sure, you follow bc you play after this match. It’s nice to be in a position to play an important match tomorrow.. Hopefully I can do better, no? But I was focused about today’s match. Next match will be a different problem. It’s a different opponent. He has a confidence boost bc he beat the #1 player. It’ll be very tough. As I said, I’m happy to be in the semis again,” said Sinner.
Tommy Paul has played some of his best tennis this week in Montreal. The American has defeated Diego Schwartzman and Francisco Cerundolo in three sets in the opening rounds, before defeating Marcos Giron in straight sets in the last 16. The 12th seed scored the biggest victory of his season, after he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in three sets in the quarterfinals.
