Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner

Russia’s Top-player Daniil Medvedev brushed aside Jannik Sinner in the Miami Masters final in straight sets (7-5, 6-3). With this, he also improved the lopsided head-to-head against the Italian to 6-0. This was the 19th career title for the Russian. To make it looks a bit more interesting, he has won all his titles in different tournaments including five Masters titles and the US Open title in 2021. Out of the 19, Medvedev was never able to win a title in Clay court yet. Keeping this in mind, Sinner takes a dig at the Miami Master champion during the title ceremony.

As Sinner said, “Congrats Daniil [Medvedev], Not only for this tournament but for the last five [making] minimum the final playing incredible tennis. Congrats to you and your team. Now, Clay season starts. So Let’s see how you do there. [Then with a laugh making Medvedev as well as the crowd laughter], I wish you all the best.”

Medvedev’s impressive performance at the Indian Wells tournament was a really good sign though he lost in the finals against Carlos Alcaraz. Having already won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2021, his momentum in the past weeks suggested that he could be a strong contender for future titles even though there were struggles at the tennis paradise mostly due to the slower court speed.

Russian World No.5 Daniil Medvedev has historically struggled in the clay court season. Despite winning 19 ATP career titles, he has never won any on Clay. That speaks volumes keeping in mind that the Russian has reached at least the finals in all of the hard-court ATP-1000 tournaments and Grand Slams. Other than the Mallorca Open (Grass)won in 2021, all of his titles were won on the hard courts.

His best performance ever in a clay court tournament dates back to the Barcelona Open 2019 where he reached the finals but lost to Dominic Thiem including a bagel in the finals. The final score was 6-4, 6-0. His best-ever performance in the French Open was in 2021 when he reached the quarter-finals. He lost to arch-rival Stefanos Tsistipas then.

With yet another year passing by, the Russian will try to improve in his least preferred surface. The momentum is right there for him having won 24 out of the last 25 matches including 4 titles in the past 5 weeks. The tennis world is looking forward to seeing him perform better on clay which was once mentioned by Russian as “The surface I hate“.
