Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner opened his campaign at the 2024 Australian Open with a win over Botic van de Zandschulp. Although it required some effort to pin down the Dutch, Sinner got the job done in two hours and thirty-four minutes. But it was not Sinner’s win that caught the attention but his pledge to make his coach more Italian during the on-court interview.

After the win over Zandschulp, Sinner talked about working with Darren Cahill and his relationship with the Australian. When Sinner was asked about how he manages to bond with someone who speaks a different language and likes different things, the Italian jokingly claimed that his coach is turning into an Italian slowly.

Jannik Sinner also highlighted Cahill’s role in keeping the team environment positive. The 22-year-old said that Cahill keeps pushing him to do well and that is what’s required. About his personal relationship with Cahill, Sinner said that they have a good bond despite being a bit apart.

We have a good relationship but we are still a bit apart. It's good to have him, he gives a lot of confidence, and a lot of calmness to the team and I think that is what I need as a player. For the whole team, it is really good. He’s getting more Italian slowly. We try to teach him what kind of pasta is good to eat.

Jannik Sinner not worried about early grind he had to put for a win

While Jannik Sinner won his first-round match, it was not an easy win for the Italian ace. He had to work hard for every point. Eventually, it worked in his favor as Sinner won 6-4 7-5 6-3. But the fourth seed knew that he was not at his best in many instances.

Sinner acknowledged the mistakes he made and promised to learn from them. The Italian seemed least bothered about having to grind for a win early in the tournament. In fact, Sinner looks at it in a positive way.

I think, to be honest, it was a positive opening match. I feel like best-of-five can help me a little bit. You stay on court a little bit longer. You get to play a little bit longer, which is what I like to do. Then we see in the next rounds what's coming.

The 22-year-old analyzed his game and claimed that his serve was good. Sinner then promised to improve. He said that the two-day break will help him get enough rest and he will, hopefully, get acclimatized to the conditions in Australia. Sinner will next face either Jasper de Jong or Pedro Coachin in the second round.
