Italian star Jannik Sinner‘s rise to the top of men’s tennis has been halted by Serbian World No. 66 Dusan Lajovic in the ongoing Cincinnati Open. Days after he won the Canadian Open in a thrilling fashion, this loss must be heartbreaking for the young Italian. Notably, with this loss, his chances of going deep in the US Open will also be questioned.
The current World No.6 lost the first match (second round) of Cincinnati in straight sets: 6-4. 7-6 (7-4). The optimists would like to believe that the less rest between the Canadian Open triumph and the Cincinnati Open proved crucial in the Italian’s loss. This loss anyway would make his chances to become the number 4 seed for the US Open in vain.
The Italian youngster will try to be ready for the US Open with a lot of rest now. He lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the US Open last year in a five-set thriller. This year, he will be trying to improve his performance without losing much confidence from the Cincinnati Open loss.
Jannik Sinner’s best result in a Grand Slam is the Wimbledon semi-final berth

The 22-year-old Italian is one of the best players on the Tour right now. The Canadian Open, which he won last week, was the result of his ultimate dedication and work ethic. Though it was only his first ATP 1000 title, the young Italian will sure be winning more of those in the near future. In a year where his biggest rival, Carlos Alcaraz, won his second Grand Slam title, Sinner will be trying to get his first, at least in the US Open.
Sinner’s best-ever Grand Slam result is a semi-final appearance at Wimbledon this year. He was the underdog in the last-four match against Serbian star Novak Djokovic, like in their previous encounter in the 2022 Wimbledon quarterfinals. But this time, he was not even able to take a set against Djokovic. In 2022, he was two sets up against the same guy.
Though the hype surrounding the Italian youngster is not as big as that of Spanish World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, he will be a force to be reckoned with for the other players sooner or later. The Canadian Open triumph was only the beginning.
