As the 2023 season comes to a close, the ATP handed over the ‘Best Coach of the Year’ award to the coaching pair of Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill. The duo won the prize for their well-deserved efforts which were reflected by the incredible season that the Italian, Jannik Sinner has had.

The Italian’s coaching duo has helped Sinner play in what might probably be his best season on tour in his career so far. Apart from winning his maiden Masters 1000 title in Toronto earlier this year, he also reached the finals of the ATP Finals tournament in addition to leading Team Italy to lift the Davis Cup trophy for the first time in 47 years.

The 2023 season has come to an end and the ATP is now handing out the awards for the best players and best coaches, a tradition that is being followed annually. The coaching pair of Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill were nominated alongside Craig Boynton, the coach of Hubert Hurkacz, Juan Carlos Ferrero of Carlos Alcaraz and Goran Ivanisevic for Novak Djokovic.

The World No.4’s coach received the award from the nominees and it was surprising to see how even after winning 3 of the 4 Grand Slam titles in the year in addition to the ATP Finals at year-end still did not earn Ivanisevic the title for the best coach.

Nevertheless, the Italian’s coaching pair worked hard to get him to play his maiden Wimbledon semi-final this year and end the year with a 64-15 win record.

Apart from leading Team Italy to victory over Team Serbia in the Davis Cup finals, the World No.4 also defeated the mighty 24-time Grand Slam champion on two occasions this year, at the Davis Cup and in the group stage match of the ATP Finals in Turin. He has looked in top form this year winning 4 level trophies this season and has also been nominated in the best player category of the ATP awards.

His coaches, Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi have been working closely with him to improve his mental game more than his physical game. Simone Vagnozzi has just started working for the Italian but he has known his talents much before when he was just 14 years old. It will be interesting to see what new this duo brings to the youngster’s game in the upcoming 2024 season.
