Italy is a proud country at the moment with its streak of victories. At the end of 2023, the country won their first Davis Cup in 47 years. After that, it was Jannik Sinner, who managed to win the Australian Open and become one of the youngest Italians to do so.
It was time for an Italian woman to follow, and rightly so Jasmine Paolini answered the call. With immense skill and a little bit of luck, the Italian managed to win the Dubai Tennis Championship. She beat Maria Sakkari, got a walkover over Elena Rybakina, and concluded with Anna Kalinskaya to win the WTA 1000 tournament.
In the post-match interview, the interviewer asked the champion if she would have a pizza after the tournament win. Paolini replied to the unusual question:
I don’t know. It’s too late. I don’t care about pizza tonight.Jasmine Paolini
Even though the champion took it as a joke, many fans thought the question was rather offensive.
“Dumbest question ever to a 1000 Champion” commented a fan on X, after listening to this question by the interviewer. Nonetheless, Paolini was delighted with her win to get offended by the question. Despite getting a tough draw, she beat many previous winners to emerge victorious in Dubai.
Jasmine Paolini pulls off a dramatic victory to overcome the Anna Kalinskaya challenge
Jasmine Paolini stood out on top at the Dubai Tennis Championships after beating multiple WTA stars consecutively.
As an unranked player, she was on the tougher side of the draw, facing many WTA stars on the way. Paolini beat Beatriz Haddad Maia, Leylah Fernandez, Maria Sakkari, Elena Rybakina, and Sorana Cirstea to advance to the finals. Here are some of the reactions to the interviewer’s question:
Despite losing the first set, the Italian came back to win the match. She took the next two sets to the end to win them. Paolini won 4-6,7-5,7-5 to win the match and another WTA 1000 tournament. She was extremely delighted with the win and increased her ranking. With this win, she made her Top 15 debut and became only the third Italian woman to win a WTA 1000 in Dubai. She admitted to playing well and hopes to continue doing the same in the future.
