The tennis world is abuzz with the latest controversy involving Czech rising star Karolina Muchova in the US Open. After her latest quarter-final victory against Sorana Cîrstea, she was in the firing range of the former Australian tennis player turned commentator Jelena Dokic. The commentator accused Karolina of taking a rather long break after her first-set victory in the match.

In a rather easy match, Karolina thrashed her opponent in the first set and then took an extended break which triggered the commentator as well as her opponent Sorana. The Romanian was furious at Muchova for taking a lengthy break. “I am the one waiting for her to serve,” said Cirstea to the umpire. This move by the Czech also left the commentators of the match puzzled. “She went for a change of shirt and usually you don’t do that when you’ve got the momentum,” Dokic said in commentary for Channel Nine.

Muchova’s actions left everyone questioning the mindset and tactics of the player. The Czech was well ahead of the game and it did not seem valid to take a long break which could break the momentum of her game. However, Muchova easily beat Sorana in two consecutive sets where the Romanian won only three games in the entire match. The final score was 6-0, 6-3 and with this win, Muchova marched on to the Semifinals.

Muchova, who has created wonders in both singles and doubles tournaments, was caught in between controversies due to the long break she took during her match against Sorana Cirstea. This action by Muchova was seen back in the 2021 Australian Open quarterfinals when she took an unnecessary medical timeout to regain her focus.

Daniil Medvedev is another player who is known to take long breaks to amp himself up and be mentally prepared. Taking breaks is not illegal, but it angers the opponent because they are in the momentum of playing a game and don’t want to lose it. Hence, Sorana was frustrated at her opponent.

Karolina Muchova now advances to the Semifinals of the US Open, where she faces America’s rising star Coco Gauff. As Gauff is in her best form, Muchova must be mentally set to play the toughest match of her run with the all-important title at stake.
