There have been several complaints from players in the ongoing US Open who claimed to smell weed during their matches. The latest addition to that list was Latvian player Jelena Ostapenko, who claimed to have got the smell in every single one of her matches so far in the US Open.
“Every match I smell it. It’s not a surprise they were complaining about. Yeah, today there was a little bit crazy situation, yeah, when a fan was shouting during the serves, which he’s not supposed to do. I was leading 4-1 in the third set, and then suddenly, I served a serve and he started to shout like crazy. Of course, the chair umpire told him to be quiet,” Ostapenko said after her match against Bernarda Pera.
Before this, Maria Sakkari and Alexander Zverev were two prominent faces who made the same complaint after their matches. Greek Player Maria Sakkari had claimed that she could get a clear smell of weed during her match against Rebeka Masarova. However, she said that things like this are common. Sometimes they get smell of cigarettes, sometimes of food and sometimes weed.
However, she did not put the blame for her disappointing loss against the Spaniard in the first round on the smell of weed. Sakkari’s first round exit came as a shock to everyone and as the eighth seeds player lost to Masarova in straight sets.
Jelena Ostapenko faces Iga Swiatek in the Round of 16
Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko will be facing World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the Round of 16 of the US Open. She won all three of her matches so far in the US Open pretty convincingly and will now be up for perhaps the most difficult match in her US Open campaign.
The Pole is in the form of her life and is looking all set to win the 5th Grand Slam of her life. Jelena Ostapenko will have to stop her in order to advance in the tournament.
It is interesting to note that although Swiatek is widely regarded as the better player out of the two, she is yet to defeat Jelena Ostapenko in a singles match. The two of them have faced each other three times, and the Latvian emerged victorious in all those matches.
