Jelena Ostapenko was giggling all along as she defeated defending champion Iga Swiatek at the 2023 US Open. The Latvian ace took the game in an hour and 48 minutes in three sets of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. With this win, Ostapenko cruised into the quarterfinals and set herself a face-off against Coco Gauff. But despite everything going in her favor, Ostapenko criticized electronic line calling.
The 26-year-old reiterated her stance saying that she does not trust the technology 100%. Although Ostapenko accepted that at times she loses her cool out of frustration, the Latvian said that she does not trust electronic line calling.
“Honestly I don’t believe in it 100%,” Ostapenko said in her post-match interview. “I mean sometimes of course you get frustrated, but you just have to stay with the calls and nothing is gonna change and you just have to play the next point. But sometimes I get really frustrated because I really want to win.”
It is worth mentioning that Ostapenko has had issues with electronic line calling. Earlier this year, during the 2023 Australian Open, after her quarterfinal win against Gauff, Ostapenko had openly called out the system, saying she does not believe in it. “Honestly, this live electronic system, I don’t know,” she had said back then.

Coming back to Jelena Ostapenko‘s match against Iga Swiatek, the 26-yer-ol Latvian had little trouble defeating the Polish ace. Ostapenko started slow and also conceded the first set 3-6. But once she got in her zone, it was almost impossible for even the world’s best player to stop her. Ostapenko took the second set 6-3 and further asserted her dominance by winning the final set 6-1.
With this win, Jelena Ostapenko bettered her head-to-head record against Swiatek, making it 4-0. The Latvian knew about her matchup against Swiatek coming into this game and made full use of it. Ostapenko also explained how she exploited the Pole’s weakness against power players. “I put her under pressure, of course, because I was hitting quite many winners, and she didn’t like the power I was giving her because she needed some time to play,” Ostapenko explained.
The 26-year-old was also really happy about qualifying for the quarterfinals for the first time at the Flushing Meadows. This is Ostapenko’s second quarterfinal qualification at a Grand Slam. She had also made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open.
