A straight-set win for Jelena Ostapenko
In the final on Saturday, Ostapenko defeated No. 15 Daria Kasatkina by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Ostapenko’s victory was not only her fourth hard-court championship triumph but also a significant milestone as she returned to the Top 10 for the first time in almost five years.
Ostapenko’s triumph reflected her great form in the 2024 season. After a strong start in Brisbane, where she reached the quarterfinals and won the doubles title with Lyudmyla Kichenok, she extended her remarkable run in Adelaide.
Ostapenko, seeded No. 6, battled through a difficult draw, defeating formidable opponents such as Sorana Cirstea, Caroline Garcia, Marta Kostyuk, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Kasatkina in the final.
Ostapenko broke serve in every game when she saw a break point, and she utilized her opportunities, securing five breaks against Kasatkina. Despite Kasatkina’s three comebacks, her ability to capitalize on key occasions ultimately proved decisive.
After a crucial 2-2 tie in the first set, Ostapenko organized a break to lead 3-2, then extended her lead to 5-2 before finishing the match with a flawless drop shot. In the second set, she maintained her control as Kasatkina fought to keep the ball out of her opponent’s strike zone. The Latvian won after just 1 hour and 15 minutes, cementing her return to the top tier of women’s tennis.
