Jessica Pegula hopes to not meet Iga Swiatek again as she eyes a ‘grand slam’ title next after her thumping triumph in Guadalajara

American ace Jessica Pegula won the biggest title of her career by beating Maria Sakkari in the final of the 2022 Guadalajara Open on Sunday. She defeated Sakkari in straight sets 6-2,6-3 to win her second career title and her maiden WTA 1000 title. Throughout the week, Pegula was very dominant and dropped just one set.
She defeated 4 grand slam champions in a row before eventually beating Sakkari, who is in great form too, in the final. She has been pretty consistent throughout the year and is currently third in the WTA Race- which speaks volumes about her consistency. As a result, Pegula is now the new World No.3 which also is her career-best ranking.
She spoke about her next target- the grand slams after her win. She has been pretty consistent in majors too this year having made 3 quarterfinals out of the 4 and reaching the Round of 32 at Wimbledon. In the three quarterfinals she played, she lost to eventual champions in all of them- Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and Ash Barty at the Australian Open.
She said that she is very confident to do well at majors after this title triumph in Mexico and joked that she wouldn’t again meet Swiatek in the last 8. “Yeah, I hope so. That’s the next step, right? Hopefully, as long as I don’t play Iga in the quarterfinals. Hopefully, I’ll get there (laughter). I think it’s going to give me a lot of confidence going into the Grand Slams,” Pegula said.

Pegula further spoke about reaching new heights and said that she has proven a lot to herself in the last few months and cited examples of various places she played at.
“I’ve proved a lot to myself. I’ve played in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Denver, Colorado in the U.S. It ended in disaster. I was horrible, horrible. I swore off altitude for the last couple of years. I think we’re going to have to come back,” she said.
