American World No.3 Jessica Pegula who is in the form of her life has come up with some answers to those who believe that all the WTA players are affluent. She has reached the second round after thrashing Jaqueline Cristian 6-0,6-1 in the first round of the Australian Open 2023 now. The 28-year-old American is yet to reach at least a semi-final in any of the Grand Slam tournaments.

Pegula quoted about the gender pay disparity in the Netflix series “Break Point”. She said, “I’ve played several tournaments where they’re joint events and I’m making significantly less (money), And I’ve had people come up to me and say ‘Oh my god you won that tournament and they made that much and you made that.’ You know, that’s bull***t.

The current World No.3 Jessica Pegula pioneered Team USA to the inaugural United Cup title. Winning 8 of her 9 matches there boosted her odds for the Australian Open 2023 as well. Novak Djokovic leads the top contenders for the title in men’s singles. There is no single top contender in the women’s side after Iga Swiatek’s downfall in the United Cup against Pegula in straights.

Pegula destroyed Iga Swiatek 6-2,6-2 in the United cup. A spectacular win against the Italian Martina Trevisan 6-4,6-2 in the finals of the United Cup followed this. With the rejuvenated ability to hit the ground strokes and a champion’s mentality, Pegula is definitely in hunger for more success. She was able to reach 3 out of the 4 slams last year. She also has the experience of playing two quarter-finals in the Australian Open already.

With a lot of momentum on her side, Pegula is ready for big battles, and on paper, there won’t be any threat to her in the second round scheduled to be played today. That being said, if she ends up with problems under the scorching heat of Melbourne, the journey to greatness won’t be smooth.
