Chris Evert has a record seven French Open titles to her name. But, according to her ex-husband John Llyod, when she expressed that she hoped the young Iga Swiatek might one day break her record, she was lying.

Llyod opined that no one would want their records to be broken by someone else despite that person saying otherwise. Though Swiatek is behind Evert, she has already equaled Serena Williams and Monica Seles‘ tally.

If you hear Chrissie say that she hopes that Iga will break that record, she is not telling the truth. She doesn’t want her to break that record. I promise you. She is a lovely lady but no one wants their records broken. They say they do, but they’re not telling the full truth,” Llyod said while speaking on Tennis Channel’s Inside In podcast.

The 22-year-old has three Roland Garros trophies to her name since her first Grand Slam title in 2020. That year she announced her arrival on the clay court major by emerging victorious. Her second French Open trophy came in 2022, and she defended it by winning in 2023 as well.

Former world number one Andy Roddick has pointed out how tennis legend Serena Williams and the heavy focus on the Big-3 (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer) have overshadowed Iga Swiatek’s achievements. Williams retired from tennis last year, and so did Ashleigh Barty, which saw Swiatek emerging as world number one.

She’s phenomenal, won four Slams now. Kind of in the tornado of the Big-3 and Serena [Williams] retiring, this storyline is getting lost a little bit. She is you know three-time Roland Garros winner, won one US Open last year. Just history being made all the time,” Roddick said (via MSNBC).

Swiatek, apart from three French Opens, has also lifted the 2022 US Open title. She was even on a record 37-match unbeaten streak and has a total of 14 WTA Tour-level titles. Swiatek will now be seen on grass courts tournaments, which is not her forte. She is set to play in Bad Homburg, Germany, which is scheduled to start on June 26.

These matches will help her to prepare well for Wimbledon, where she has struggled a great deal. Her best result on the grass-court Grand Slam event came in 2021 when she reached the fourth round. Last year, she fell to Alize Cornet in the third round in straight sets with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
