It’s that time of the year again when Team World will lock horns against Team Europe in the most coveted Laver Cup. With the captains lining up ahead of the tournament, Team World’s John McEnroe took a dig at his longtime rival and Team Europe’s Bjorn Borg during an event show at Vancouver. Borg was patient enough to take the mocking very lightly considering how his team lost last year despite having a star-studded lineup.
Last year, Team Europe had the Big 4 of tennis altogether, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray along with the likes of Casper Ruud, Cameron Norrie, Matteo Berettini, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Despite such a star-studded lineup, the European team suffered a heavy defeat resulting in a confidence boost for McEnroe’s side ahead of this year’s edition.
During the event, McEnroe talked about his plans after winning this year’s Laver Cup yet again with his set of players. He said, “We don’t see each other that much. We see each other as much as we see you two. He’s not going to be coming to dinner when Team World wins the Laver Cup.” Borg said, “It’s going to be fun. Laver Cup is such a great event.” On account of which McEnroe again pulled Borg’s leg by replying, “I’m gonna have to agree with you on that.”
Looking back at the John McEnroe vs. Bjorn Borg rivalry:
Two greats of the game, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe have gifted the tennis world with numerous moments to cherish for years to come. Despite that, their rivalry on the court ranged from 1978 to 1981 with a total of 14 encounters between them. Both players were very equally poised in terms of domination over one another and their results said the same as well.

Both of them won seven times each at their Head-to-Head encounters. McEnroe emerged victorious at the 1980 and the 1981 US Open and also at the 1981 Wimbledon Championships beating Borg in the final on all three occasions. It was at the 1980 Wimbledon final when Borg was successful in getting the better of the American and that is match still to this day considered one of the best in the history of the sport.
