John McEnroe, the former world number one from America has been very vocal about his opinions on various issues apart from tennis. He has been an aggressive player and often landed up in controversies. This time, the former President of the United States Donal Trump has been on the receiving end of the tennis legend.

It was in the year 2017 when Trump made a nasty and fiery remark against the NFL players regarding their involvement in the US National Anthem kneeling protests. McEnroe went on to express his disgust and even questioned the credibility and responsibility of Trump towards the citizens of his country. He blamed the former President for the lack of awareness.

McEnroe said during an interview that “The problem we have with Trump is that he is separating people and the job of a President is to bring people together, not to separate them. I don’t know when this anthem tradition began. Of course, I’d prefer it to be something else and not see footballers kneeling during the anthem, but perhaps they’re so desperate that they feel they have to do this at this time.

He further said, “At first, I didn’t think it was a good idea but now I think it may help bring about change faster. I’m in Europe and everyone is talking about it. Everything that happens in my country resonates.

McEnroe discussed the challenges he faced when he started his career. He stated the fact that current-generation tennis players are fortunate to have everything easy compared to his time on the circuit. He said “I missed my high school graduation, but I think in a way I was forced to grow up on my own. And I think that was better in a sense though. You had to learn how to get through it. Now it’s all different. The kids have coaches and media training at the age of 16, they don’t even know what they are about at 16.”

McEnroe’s Team World won its maiden Laver Cup trophy in the year 2022. The 3-time Wimbledon champion was very much ecstatic and proud of his boys during the post-match interview while dancing to celebrate his maiden win against four-time champions Team Europe.
