As Team World defended their title at the Laver Cup 2023 in Vancouver, Canada, Team World’s coach, John McEnroe was as delighted as one could be. He was happy with the dominating performance of his team and relieved to finally be on the winning side after Team Europe had a winning streak for a long time.
McEnroe, in the on court interview after winning, stated, ” It felt unbelievable to kick their a** baby,” he exclaimed in excitement, also pointing out the fact that Team Europe has also done the same a repeated number of times. The American legend justified his comment afterwards, “Hey they’ve kicked ours many times, okay?”
He also stated, ” As I said last time, we have a great team spirit and good combination of youth and experience.” John was excited and, with his comments, added salt to the wounds of Team Europe in a humorous and sporting manner.
The former American tennis player also talked about how the battle was a close one last year against Team Europe, when they won the title for the first time. He also mentioned how this time, all the players stepped up from Day 1, contributing to the success of the team.
Overall, John McEnroe looked extremely elated and happy with the win and with the performance of his team. Lastly, he also congratulated the crowd to be there to witness and support the event without which it would not have been such a fascinating event.
Team World wins the Laver Cup for the 2nd time in a row
Team World defeated Team Europe 13-2 to defend their title this year. They displayed an intensely dominating victory over Bjorn Borg‘s team. The narrative has finally shifted towards John McEnroe and his crew after losing the first 4 editions of the tournament against a strong Team Europe.
Post the victory, McEnroe talked about winning the previous title against a star packed team which consisted of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray and how that win built the confidence that they can win continuously as well. That win was a hump which they had to conquer in order to move forward and win more titles.
“Last second it was a battle to the end when we won last year. And we came in, as I said last night, we had a great team spirit, a good combination of youth and experience and I felt it from the word go and we stepped up and I thought all the guys played great,” McEnroe said.
Going into the third day of the tournament, Team World already had a 10-2 advantage and needed just one more win to hold the title. Frances Tiafoe with fellow American Ben Shelton defeated the pair of Andy Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(4), 7-6(5) to lift the Laver Cup for the second time in a row.
