Wimbledon is known for its strict dress code. All the players have to dress in white and those who sit in the Royal Box have to follow the rules as well, including the members of the British royal family. But Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle once seemed to have broken the rules only for a short time, which wasn’t noticed by many.
A picture of Prince George went viral during the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. On a hot sunny day, George was dressed in a suit with a tie; because the men have to wear a suit and tie to watch the matches from the Royal Box. The ladies seated there are not allowed to wear hats, but there’s a reason for that.
No tickets are made available for the seats at the Royal Box because it’s up to the Chairman of the All England Club to invite guests to fill those 74 Llyod Loom seats. “The Royal Box has been used for the entertainment of friends and guests of Wimbledon since 1922,” as per Wimbledon.
The Chairman invites personalities such as British and overseas Royal families, British armed forces, players or ex-players from the tennis world, British government officials, and other important people. As already mentioned, men have to wear suits; while the ladies are not allowed to wear hats. The reason is that hats obscure the vision of those people who are seated behind them.
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle wore hats

Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, attended the 2018 Wimbledon to watch the ladies’ singles final. Markle wore her famous white straw hat with a black band above the brim. It was the same hat she wore in 2016 at the All England Club as well. Then in 2019, while watching Serena Williams‘ match against Kaja Juvan, again she was spotted wearing the hat, but she didn’t sit at the Royal Box.
Middleton, the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, wore a hat just once while watching the match from the Royal Box. Last year, during the women’s singles final between Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur, she sat at the Royal Box, wearing a hat.
It’s worth noting that Wimbledon allows the attendees at the Royal Box to wear hats amid high temperatures. These are similar white hands with the band of Wimbledon’s purple and green color. These hats were passed around to those who wanted them during that game, but as Middleton had already brought her hat that was avoided even though she wore it only for a short time.
