Katerina Siniakova made a sarcastic gesture aimed at WTA’s chief executive officer, Steve Simon, during her third group stage doubles match in the WTA Finals in an attempt to protest against the horrible court conditions in the tournament. The video was posted on social media and went viral in no time. Fans have supported Siniakova for her stand.
The incident took place during the match between the duo of Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova and the duo of Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe. Siniakova’s team lost 6-4, 7-5 in straight sets.
During one of the sets, the Czech international clearly missed her footing on the court, proving yet again that the courts of the WTA Finals are problematic. After that, Siniakova gestured a thumbs up at the camera, which was clearly sarcastic and, according to everyone, directed at Steve Simon.
They have now played all three of their group stage matches and won only one out of those three – the one against Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. Thus, their fate in the WTA Finals will depend on the result of the match between Gabriela Dabrowski/ Erin Routliffe and Pegula/ Gauff.
Players like Iga Swiatek, Marketa Vondrousova, and Elena Rybakina have all voiced their opinions about the poor quality of the courts in the WTA Finals. The players are clearly struggling due to it and it is often causing them to lose crucial points and make errors. This is definitely a disaster on WTA’s part.
WTA apologizes to players for the situation in Cancun
After facing so much criticism from fans and players alike about the poor management in the WTA Finals, Steve Simon has finally apologized to the players through a letter. In the letter that was leaked to Sports Illustrated, the chief executive says that the WTA accepts responsibility for the challenging and unpleasant situation that the players are having to face in the tournament.
It is clear you are not happy with the decision to be here in Cancún. I understand that and you have been heard. It is not a perfect event, we understand the conditions are a challenge and the WTA accepts responsibility for that.
While the apology won’t make the issues go right away, players might be slightly appreciative that WTA is at least accepting their errors. Nonetheless, the management level is reflecting badly on promoters.
