With the fame that comes with being arguably the greatest players of all time, there also come controversies to which Serena Williams is no stranger. Always managing to capture the headlines with almost everything she does, Serena Williams is a controversial athlete and her remarks and comments are not hidden from the public.
When Serena Williams called out John McEnroe
Back in 2017, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Show, American tennis legend John McEnroe talked about Serena Williams and despite calling her the greatest female player of all time, McEnroe couldn’t resist but make a sexist remark against Williams, stating that she wouldn’t as great as she is if she competed amongst the men.
McEnroe on the show said, “Perhaps [her ranking] would be a little higher, perhaps it’d be a little lower, and on a given day Serena could beat some players. I believe because she’s so incredibly strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke because she’s been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, the US Open, etc. But if she had to just play the circuit — the men’s circuit — that would be an entirely different story. That doesn’t mean I don’t think Serena is an incredible player, best female player ever — no question.”
To McEnroe’s comments, Serena Williams had a response of her own as she didn’t lightly to his remarks, Williams made a tweet saying, “Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based,” McEnroe’s statements were not taken lightly as there was minimal proof to back them up, it sourced up throwing back to the time when a man ranked 208 in the world defeated both Serena and Venus Williams in 1998.
