This season, Karatsev’s performance has been very inconsistent, but during the last several weeks, he has been rather consistent. He overcame Hugo Gaston and Lorenzo Sonego in the Swedish Open to go to the quarterfinals. In the round of eight, he was defeated by eventual champion Francisco Cerundolo. After that, Karatsev participated in the Hamburg European Open. He won against Daniel Elahi Galan after defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round. The second set was a tight one. He saved a set point as the Serb was serving to remain in the set at 6-5 to force a tie-break. Lajovic maintained his composure in the tie-break and prevailed to win the match 6-4, 7-6. (5).

After a series of disappointing performances, Karatsev suddenly looks to be regaining his form. He’ll be aiming to maintain the momentum after two straight quarterfinal appearances in Bastad and Hamburg. Lajovic has had some recent difficulties. Since doing so at the Madrid Open in May, he hasn’t won back-to-back games. Only two of the Serb’s previous eight matches have ended in victories, and one of those triumphs came when his opponent resigned in the middle of their encounter.
